Beach Home Remodel

Helping a client realize their vision in their home is always a joint effort. The space needs to reflect the client's wants and needs and not always the designers preferences. For instance, with children functionality is key and with this client an outdoor rug suited the family's lifestyle much better as it can be bleached over and over and not lose its colors. This two story Atlantic Beach home was originally divided into three separate areas for the living room, dining room, and kitchen and hadn't been updated since the seventies.

With the addition of a large 2300 lb. beam in the ceiling, the walls could be opened up and space could be made for a six foot island with a custom walnut butcher block top.

The bottom floor was gutted and a new lighting plan was devised while popcorn ceilings were removed and new wood look porcelain tile was laid to invite the clients guests in from foyer and draw them into the cozy living space.

The kitchen is truly the heart of the home for this client and they wanted their design to reflect that. The island features seating for three, a space for the client's cookbooks, and a large warming drawer to keep meals ready and rolls hot for a late supper. The cabinets and walnut butcherblock was custom made by a local artisan cabinetmaker and features a simple shaker door and bushed nickel hardware to keep the look simple and breezy. Organization was high on the clients wish list so most of the bottom cabinetry is drawer stacks that also includes a custom pullout for her spatulas beside the oven.

In addition to organization another need of the client was to be able to showcase many of her photographs and collected artworks. So a gallery wall was planned in the living room at a point of prominence as well as in the foyer over the stairs in order to share her creative talents with guests. Photographs and special mementos were interspersed with the paintings and sketches of the clients parents in order to honor them and their legacy.
